Graduates ‘do not want 2:1 degrees used as a filter’

Graduates want employers to ditch their minimum requirements of a 2:1 degree, according to a new poll.

More than 600 students and banking graduates took part in a survey for Milkround.com and it revealed that 58 per cent want the prerequisite scrapped.

Spokesperson for the organisation Mike Barnard remarked: "Graduates who don’t have a 2.1 degree will always be frustrated by its appearance as a minimum requirement."

He added that bosses use it as a cut-off point simply to reduce the number of applications they receive.

Mr Bernard also noted recruiters who do this could be missing out on candidates with non-academic talents that could be needed for the role.

He stated that each institution is different so a 2:1 degree from one university may not be the same as one from another.

It was recently suggested that contenders who dress well are more likely to succeed at interviews.

Writing for Hitched magazine, Diane Gottsman said that "every detail counts" in the jobs market.
