Finance graduate job seekers in east London could enhance their prospects by way of attending a new "finishing school" scheme.

The launch of Fastlaners, which aims to help make the transition into employment easier for graduates, is an intensive two-week course on everything from voice training to workplace etiquette.

Funded by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills and run by the Young Foundation, participating graduates will benefit from the support of volunteer mentors from a wide range of sectors.

Minister of State for Higher Education David Lammy said of the launch: "Particularly in these more challenging times, Fastlaners provides real help for new graduates to learn the types of skills which are so vital for the workplace.

"Fastlaners brings young people into one place working together, learning from experienced mentors, to boost their confidence and reassure them that they are not alone."

Associate director of the Young Foundation Rushanara Ali said the ongoing effects of the recession were hitting young graduates the hardest.

It is vital that the "enormous talent" among graduates does not get wasted, said Ms Ali, adding that "we can’t afford to have a lost generation".

The government is investing £100,000 into the scheme which will be spread over a two year period. ADNFCR-2605-ID-19666409-ADNFCR
