Finance graduate job seekers told ‘experience is everything’

Finance graduate job seekers with a master’s degree have been told that the qualification itself is not enough to secure them a job – they also have to get experience.

Charlie Ball, deputy research director of the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (Hecsu), told the Independent that a postgraduate course will "not automatically solve your employment issues".

"A bit of paper is not of enormous value to employers – but what you do with that year is," he said.

"Postgraduate degrees buy time to think about the employment market, make contacts, do some work experience and develop the practical skills you need to get hired."

The news provider referred to a recent survey by Hecsu that revealed 81 per cent of undergraduates were considering further study because they feared they would not be able to get a job.

According to Leah Ganley, from pressure group Youth Fight for Jobs, graduates are faced with a "bleak" situation when they leave university, reports the Journal.

Ms Ganley told the news provider that she was seeing record increases in people applying for university due to limited employment prospects.
