Top banking jobs are still too often the preserve of men, it has been claimed.
The comments were made by Royal Bank of Scotland’s HR director Neil Foden, speaking to Personnel Today.
Last week, the long-awaited Walker Review into the governance of banks called for more women to be appointed within the sector.
Mr Foden told the magazine: "It is the case that when you try in any large company to recruit a female finance director, it will be difficult to do. The number of women who can do the role is significantly smaller than the number of men."
However, he warned that quotas might not successfully address the gender imbalance: "Targeting would only work if you had a reasonable chance of success."
Minister for women and equality Harriet Harman has claimed that the crisis in the banking sector last year could have been avoided if there had been more women in senior decision-making posts at banks.
