Job seekers take on hobbies to gain edge

Most UK workers are taking on hobbies to impress prospective employers, according to a new survey by Hirescores.com.

The poll shows that more than three quarters of people (76 per cent) are beefing up their CV by filling their free time with activities, reports Recruiter.

Charity work emerged as the most popular activity for boosting career prospects, with 79 per cent choosing to give their time philanthropically.

Learning a foreign language and doing classes also featured prominently, although some respondents felt that leisure activities such as going to the gym or socialising with friends would win them CV points.

For those wanting to secure a place on finance graduate schemes, anything that could give their CV an edge over other candidates is a bonus.

However, it is equally important to get the right careers advice to keep abreast of the latest developments in the financial sector.

This week Lord Browne, who is leading a government review into higher education funding, said he believed university degrees could be worth less financially to graduates than previously thought.

With more people attending university than ever before, candidates may be right to boost their CVs with additional activities.
