The number of positions on graduate banking schemes could be restricted, if the BNP Paribas’ economic outlook is anything to go by.
According to the finance company, it could take some time before the UK economy recovers.
Alan Clarke, an economist at BNP Paribas, predicted that the economy would fall into a "soft patch" on its way to recovery, during which time employment could remain subdued.
He said: "We are coming out of the recession, we will have a quarter or two of decent growth but then I think we will go back down into a soft patch.
"We are off the life support but are not really ready to run the London marathon yet."
Mr Clarke was speaking after a survey by the Independent indicated that many businesses believe it could take a long time before the UK is over its financial crisis.
The newspaper learned that more than half of businesses have not yet detected any signs of recovery, while one in ten remain unsure about the state of the economy.
