Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) intends to shift many of its jobs away from London to its base in the Scottish capital Edinburgh, the company’s boss has indicated.
Chief executive of the firm Stephen Hester made the comments while giving evidence to the economy committee of the Scottish Parliament, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.
He said any move of jobs southwards would take place on merit rather than "geographic bias", while he highlighted the investment the group has already made in Edinburgh by siting its payments centre there, the news provider reported.
Mr Hester said that although all decisions are made on the basis of business sense, the bank’s headquarters would remain in Scotland because of the important cultural link the firm has with the country.
His comments are good news for those seeking banking graduate jobs north of the border, although the pool of vacancies in London may decrease if RBS shifts more posts to Scotland.
Candidates should consider professional qualifications and getting the best available careers advice to give themselves an advantage over other candidates.
Earlier this month, RBS cut almost 3,000 jobs in Scotland, bringing total job losses at the firm to over 10,000 in the UK.
